About riding Paros

Golden Beach is a kilometre of golden sand on Paros's south-east coast, right at the exit of the Paros-Naxos channel, where the Meltemi runs clean. It is Greece's most famous windsurf spot: next-door New Golden Beach hosted the PWA World Cup from 1993. Flat water inside the bay, waves out in the channel, and on the island's other side sits Pounda, the kite strip facing Antiparos.

The winds, by name

Meltemi. The one wind that matters: a synoptic Aegean northerly with a thermal push at midday, accelerating as it squeezes into the Paros-Naxos channel. The local schools talk of 5–6 Beaufort, 18–28 knots, through July and August; it typically builds late morning and holds into the late afternoon. At Pounda the same northerly comes through the Antiparos channel and lands side-shore on the strip.

When to come

June to September is the season, with July and August at the Meltemi's peak; May and October give days on the shoulders. The water is Aegean, 22–26 degrees in summer: the suit is rarely the deciding factor.

What to watch

The northerly runs side-shore to side-offshore at Golden Beach, with gusts near the shore when it blows hard: stay upwind and do not let the channel pull you out. Beyond the bay the channel's waves and current are experienced riders' business. At Pounda the strip is narrow, the schools many, and the Antiparos ferry leaves the pier every ~45 minutes.

Getting there

Golden Beach is about 20 km from Parikia and 2 km from Drios, with schools and rental on the beach; Pounda is 8 km from Parikia, five minutes from the airport.

Questions riders ask

  1. When does the Meltemi blow at Paros?

From late May to September, with July and August at its heart. The Golden Beach schools talk of 5–6 Beaufort (18–28 knots) on Meltemi days, typically from late morning into the late afternoon.

  2. Windsurf or kite at Paros: which goes where?

The island splits the scene: windsurf at Golden Beach and New Golden Beach on the Naxos channel, kite at Pounda facing Antiparos, where the schools have their own strip. Wing works at both.

  3. Is Golden Beach good for beginners?

Inside the bay yes: the water stays shallow and flat even in a strong Meltemi, and the schools teach there. But the wind does not push you back onto the sand the way a purely onshore spot does, so beginners stay in the schools' zone. The waves out in the channel are advanced territory.

  4. What kite sizes do you need at Pounda?

Trip guides who stayed a season report using every size from 7 to 12 m, with a big kite or a foil for the days the Meltemi sits at 12–15 knots. On the full July-August days 8–10 m is the norm.
